School Achievements and areas to improve

As we finish the final graphics class at Baker , I am happy to say that I have enjoyed this new Prof. In my personal opinion , I believe Chris has improved the graphic skills and or presentational techniques in each and evry one of us.
The semester has helped me first of all to move out of the corporate feel that I have worked in for so long and secondly; I believe I have improved in usages of colors to express feelings and emotions.
The area that I still need improvement in is designing one concept and then restricting my mind to expand to other ideas. I feel that I get stuck with one idea and then just keep building on around that idea. The second thing that needs expanding is my portfolio ideas. I have a number items that represent me well but I feel I need to design a number of pieces that are more creative and less corporate.

I am an adult, why protect me?

Its been a few days since the situation that arose in class the last time we met.
Are we able to smoke cigarettes, vote in elections, and choose to join the Military to protect Americans and KILL others.
Whats even better --- we are called adults!!!
How then can we be censored?
The Nude has been painted by the masters, Raphael, Michelangelo, and de Vinci to name a few. The Nude is a beautiful to look. All of its curves and shadows to softness all working together to express the bodies beauty. The female of course and the male for the opposite sex!!!
As I have thought about this during this time off, I have come to accept that the Conservative group of people want us Students to be creative as long as it doesn't involve SEX!
I am offended by the actions of the management.
I have been married sixteen years and have three kids. I am able to chose what offends me! The male unit, twig, shaft, rod or what every you want to call IT, is a natural item that males were created with. Its the same as breasts on a women that provide life giving nutrients to a baby.
I am a Adult! Let me chose what offends me! I am a college student not a grade school student!

The Blog Power!!

This past week I happen to read an article that showed up on Ad Age Daily's email newsletter. Dunkin' Dounts Kills Rachael Ray AD. The headline caught my eye and I had to read it.
The story goes as , Dunkin' Dounts pulled the ad because conservative bloggers commented that the black and white scarf that Rachael wore looked to much like a keffiyah. The keffiyah is a traditional headdress worn by Arab men associated with jihad.
What are they thinking! Rachael Ray and jihad.
Dunkin' Dounts pulled the ad limit the possibility of confusing the message when all they are is attempting to promote their Iced Coffee line.
Beside the love I have for Rachael Ray, sorry Dunkin' Dounts I love Tim Horton's Ice Cappuccino.
I can now understand the power of the blog a Chris mentioned. Designers need to be reviewing them to stay in touch with society.

My ideas of Bad Logos

To accomplish this requirement, I took time to think about the different logos that could be redesigned because of one point or another. This is more difficult than I thought.
I began to look at the companies that I deal with currently and or see frequently. Nike, Applebee's, Toys R Us, NAPA, UPS, DHL, Speedway, Costco, and many others are so common and accepted that I couldn't find any thing that was really "bad and ugly". Out of all of these and maybe others that I didn't mention, the most that could done is a bit of tweaking.
The next group of companies that I looked at were those business which maybe haven't spent money on a corporate identity. Examples of them are many of the Ma and Pa shops; be it retail or repair shops.
One of them would be a diesel repair shop called Abilene Diesel Injection Service and the web site is www.abilenediesel.com. As you can see the logo is no more than the first letter of each of the word in the business name thus ADIS. When written like this it looks like someone misspelled ADDIS the shoemaker. As a diesel repair facility, one of the most common items in the diesel fuel system is the injector. The letter I could incorporate the injector and the spray creating the dot above. Another idea would be blending the 'DIS' to an vector image and then incorporating with the letter 'A' or the entire word Abilene.
While these comments are my views of this logo, I believe that there is improvements that can be done.

Design Brief - Poster and Invitations

The goal of my work is to inform people that there is a Art Show at Baker College of Clinton Township. The concept will be multi dimensional with the background art work being the basic shapes or pieces. I envision this to be done in a monotone color. The next layer would contain the graphic pieces done in vector based work or raster based work. The final layer will contain the critical information. The two top layers will be created in four color with a possiblity of a pantone color added. The colors will be warm and appealing to the senses.

Design Concept - David Pierce

Who am I? Those famous words are from Johnnie Cochran. That is what I want to convey with my designs. I want to create a design that say who I am and that uses my different aspects of life.

For these upcoming designs, the concept in which I am looking to achieve will be using the corporate structure that I have being exposed to twenty years and then add the look from today.

The ideas will show the follow of up tight corporate feel flowing into the loose and edginess of the modern day look. The colors that I will focus on using are the earth tones colors of the browns, greens, and reds.

Assembled together, layouts, colors and the direction should resemble who I am.
